V. P. Makridin was born on December 20, 1821 in the village of Gavrilkovo, Zavidovsky district, Kalinin region. In 1939, he entered the hunting department of the Moscow Fur Institute. In 1944, after graduating from the institute, Vasily Platonovich was appointed head of the hunting department of the newly formed Kostroma region. Already at the beginning of his career, V. P. Makridin proved himself to be a talented organizer and an inquisitive researcher. In a short period of time, the hunting industry of the region has noticeably strengthened, work on animal husbandry has intensified, and shooting and bench sports have developed. For the first time in Russian practice, in 1947-1946, Vasily Platonovich used aircraft equipment here to account for moose and other hunting animals.
In 1948, V. P. Makridin moved to the position of senior hunter in the Laningrad Hunting Society, but soon zhv began scientific and organizational work in the Far North.
Then, for more than 10 years, he has been working in the North as the head of the department of fisheries and animal husbandry at the Naryan-Mar and Yamal Agricultural Experimental Stations, and as a senior researcher at the Research Institute of Agriculture of the Far North (Norilsk). Over the years, he has established himself as an authoritative expert on the hunting industry of the North, especially the tundra wolf.
Already in his PhD thesis, V. P. Makridin highlighted many previously unexplored aspects of the ecology and morphology of this predator (there is no need to argue in detail about how difficult the task was set by the dissertation), proposed original methods for regulating the number of wolves in tundra conditions and, in particular, convincingly demonstrated the high effectiveness of the use of aviation here. After defending his dissertation, Vasily Platonovich, with his characteristic energy, organizes the shooting of wolves from airplanes in the north of the Arkhangelsk region, Western Siberia and Central Siberia, and assists in the training of hunting crews in Yakutia. Only more than 400 wolves became personal trophies of Vasily Platonovich, the master of sports in bench shooting. As a result of his activities in many tundra regions of the USSR, losses from wolves in reindeer herds significantly decreased, and the profitability of reindeer husbandry increased. For his introduction into the practice of shooting wolves from airplanes, V. P. Makridin was a participant of the VDNH several times and was awarded its medals.
In 1962, Vasily Platonovich was elected an associate professor of the Department of Biology at the Vir Pedagogical Institute by a competition and soon became the head of this department. However, while working as a teacher, he does not break ties with hunting organizations, conducts aerial surveys of moose in Bashkiria and wild reindeer in the Yamalo-Nenets National District, and is elected deputy chairman of the Virsky Hunters Society. In 1968, V. P. Makridin returned to the Far North and continued to head the department of fisheries and animal husbandry at the Naryan-Mar Agricultural Experimental Station.
Vasily Platonovich is the author of 33 publications, including a number of articles in magazines. Many of his studies are well known not only in the USSR, but also in Canada, the USA, and Norway. Over the years of his work in the North, he spent about four thousand flight hours in the air during the accounting of commercial animals and shooting of predators.
The hero of the Day is full of creative forces and ideas, actively advocates for the protection and rational use of the nature of our Far North. We wish him great success.
